A Place at the Table looks at the economic and cultural impact of hunger in America and at possible solutions to a problem plaguing 50 million people in the U.S, one in four of whom are children. Interviews with the host of “Top Chef,” Tom Colicchio, and Jeff Bridges—who has been active in anti-hunger organizations for many years, and the working poor document this complex topic. 2012, USA, 84 minutes, documentary

Community Partners: Helping Hands, Soup Angels, Nyack HS Students Opposed to Starvation (SOS), Rockland Interfaith Breakfast Program (RIBP), JFS Wheels for Meals, Food Day, Rockland Community Against Hunger,  and Catholic Community Services.

“As important and eye-opening a documentary as you’ll see this year, A Place at the Table makes it impossible to think of hunger as merely another symptom of a shredded social safety net.” – Joe Neumaier, New York Daily News

“The filmmakers vividly illustrate the power and depth of the long-spiraling problem of “food insecurity” by immersing us in the hardscrabble lives of a cross section of our nation’s poor.” – Gary Goldstein, Los Angeles Times

“The problem, as Table shows, isn’t that the next meal never comes. It’s that when it arrives, too often it is filled with empty calories.” – Michael O’Sullivan, The Washington Post

FOOD DRIVE

Some of our neighbors do not have enough food for their families. You can help. On June 12, when you come to this screening of A Place at the Table, please bring an item of packaged food to donate to People to People or Soup Angels.

They are in need of: supermarket gift cards (used to buy vegetables and salad ingredients), Juice (cran-raspberry), large cans of chicken stock, 1-gallon jugs of water, lightly salted butter, jelly or jam (no preserves), canned whole or diced tomatoes (large 28-oz), large cans of kidney beans, paper towels, 1 gallon size ziplock bags.

PEOPLE TO  PEOPLE runs a food pantry that provides bags of packaged food to people who need it. They request: cereal or oatmeal, canned juice or juice boxes, canned vegetables, canned chili and beef stew, individual servings of fruit snacks (apple sauce, peaches, etc.), soup (dry or canned), pasta (all varieties), macaroni and cheese (boxed), flour, rice & sugar, tomato sauce and tomato puree (canned & jarred), tuna fish, regular and reduced fat mayonnaise, cooking oil in plastic bottles, peanut butter & jelly, parmalait and powdered milk.
