89-year-old legendary documentarian Agnès Varda, an inveterate risk-taker, sets out in the company of the 34-year-old French photographer and environmental artist known as JR. Their road trips through agricultural and industrial French towns find them talking to people and photographing them, but the film is much more than that. As they journey through these towns, they contemplate the passage of time and the nature of memory, the dignity of labor, and the fate of the European working class. France, 2017, 89 minutes, rated PG, documentary

Oscar nominee: Best Documentary
Best Documentary: New York Film Critics, Los Angeles Film Critics, National Society of Film Critics

“A powerful, complex and radical work. Faces Places is unforgettable.” (A NYTimes Critic’s Pick) – A.O. Scott, The New York Times

“Ms. Varda is often described as one of the greatest female directors alive, which is true. She is also one of the greatest.” – Manohla Dargis, The New York Times

“The documentary is an absolute delight, but it has a faith in everyday folks that feels both stalwart and melancholy, aware that these are exactly the people being swept away by the tides of modernity. It’s a sociopolitical cri de coeur disguised as a vacation. – Ty Burr, Boston Globe

Faces Places is a film of sheer joy, its exuberance surpassed only by its tenderness and purity of purpose.” – Ann Hornady, The Washington Post
