Crackling with a busy, wayward energy, this film draws out the screwball nature of Shakespeare’s comedy. Shot in black-and-white and set in modern day Southern California, the combative courtship of Beatrice and Benedick recalls classic romantic studio films. The knotty double plot is propelled by friendships, rivalries and a blithe spirit at once romantic and cynical. Its sly, robust eroticism abounds in earthy wordplay, which goes a long way towards making the film modern-day cool. 2012, USA 109 minutes, rated PG-13

“With its interrogations of gender, feminism, and marriage, Shakespeare’s comedy is an apt vehicle for Whedon’s own storytelling agenda.” Chris Packham, The Village Voice
“With Much Ado About Nothing, Whedon has crafted an endearing bagatelle, made with equal parts brio and love, ambition and pared-down modesty.” – Ann Hornaday, Washington Post
“Finally! A romantic comedy that works. And not just because of Shakespeare.” – Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune
