MUSEUM TOWN tells the story of a massive museum, MASS MoCA, the town of North Adams that is its home, and the great risk, hope, and power of art to transform a post-industrial city.

MASS MoCA is now the largest museum for contemporary art in the world, and it houses some of the largest works of art ever created—but three decades ago its vast brick buildings were an abandoned factory, and not long before that most everyone in town seemed to work there. How did this transformation come to be?

MUSEUM TOWN traces the story of how a Massachusetts town went from economic collapse to high art mecca. Threaded with interviews of a diverse cast – a tattooed curator, a fabricator, former factory worker, shopkeepers and artists, the film looks at community development while exploring the artistic process of celebrated artist Nick Cave as he creates his groundbreaking installation, UNTIL. With appearances by artists ranging from James Turrell to David Byrne, narration by Meryl Streep, and a soundtrack from John Stirratt of Wilco, MUSEUM TOWN captures the alliance between small-town USA and the global art world and it tells a tale that is, like any great artwork, soulful, thought-provoking, and memorable.
