Six-year-old Moonee lives in a rundown motel in Florida near Disney World. Her young mother does what she can to provide the essentials but Moonee and her friends are kids at risk. Despite this, Moonee and her pals find exuberant joy in their freedom. Bobby, the motel’s manager, looks out for them, intervening when things threaten to get dangerous. No magic can make the pain of their reality disappear, but this film manages both to cast a spell and tell the truth. USA, 2017, 111 minutes, rated R for profanity, disturbing behavior, sexual references and some drug material

Post-film discussion with local screenwriter and SUNY Purchase film faculty member, J.D. Zeik.

Oscar nominee: Willem Dafoe, Best Supporting Actor
New York Film Critics Winner: Best Director, Sean Baker

“Challenging the invisibility of a whole segment of the American underclass, The Florida Project shines a bright shaft of happy, hot summer sun on The Magic Castle and finds there no magic, but hidden treasure.” – Jessica Kiang, Playlist

“It’s the tension between hardscrabble realism and buoyant fantasy—and the understanding that they are both, in fact, vital aspects of the same experience—that makes The Florida Project so powerfully unresolved.” – Justin Chang, Los Angeles Times

“This is a near-perfect film.” –Emily Yoshida, New York Magazine

“As heartbreaking and as true a portrait of modern America as you will see.” – Ty Burr, The Boston Globe

“Glorious and gorgeous” – Manohla Dargis, The New York Times

“The best movie you’ll see this year.” – Glenn Whipp, Los Angeles Times

A must-see work, and one of the year’s best films.” – David Sims, The Atlantic
