Meet the Filmmakers: Join director Nancy Savoca and producer Richard Guay after the screening for a discussion moderated by Kristi Zea (producer, The Joneses, production designer Tower Heist).

UNION SQUARE is the setting for an unexpected reunion between two estranged sisters, one of whom is on the verge of getting married, the other on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Or as A.O. Scott put it in The New York Times, it’s “the tale of two sisters divided by temperament, geography and class.” Director/Producer partners Nancy Savoca and Producer Richard Guay (True Love, Dogfight, Household Saints, The 24 Hour Woman) were founders of Rivertown Film. 2011, USA, 80 minutes, rated R for language and hurt feelings

“The budget may have been low but the talent runs high — both behind and in front of the camera — in director Nancy Savoca’s “Union Square,” a sharp and kinetic look at the strange bonds of family. Propelled by a rangy, superbly colorful performance by Mira Sorvino, the film grabs hold of the viewer from the jump and snowballs toward a deftly moving and concise third act.” – Gary Goldstein, Los Angeles Times

“Where have you been, Mira Sorvino? The Oscar-winning actress gives a remarkable performance as a boisterous, emotionally unstable woman who reunites with her prodigal sister over the course of a weekend. The conflict starts off as fairly typical, but it gains power, thanks to sharp, well-observed writing and generous direction from the great Savoca.” Critic’s Pick – New York Magazine

“Lively, nervous energy and an expansive sympathy for the mismatched women at its heart.” – A. O. Scott, The New York Times

“The kind of character-driven movie about whacked-out characters we need more of (the characters and the movies).” – John Anderson, Newsday
