Renowned director Margarethe von Trotta’s portrayal of the 12th century Benedict nun, an extraordinary mystic, composer, writer, healer and ecological activist. Barbara Sukowa captures von Bingen’s fierce determination to expand women’s roles within the order, despite outrage from the Church. Lushly shot in preserved medieval cloisters, Vision portrays a woman who has emerged from the shadows of history as an iconoclastic pioneer of faith, change and enlightenment. 110 minutes, German with English subtitles.

Post-screening discussion: Susan Hellauer of the world-renowned ensemble Anonymous 4, will share her insights into Hildegard’s mysticism and music, and will lead the audience in a chant.

“As depicted in VISION, Hildegard was creative, passionate, fierce, dogged, manipulative, holy, learned, loyal—and obedient to her ideal of faith. She supported education and independence for women at a time when most women had neither. Being female, the story of Hildegard shows, often means fighting for parity against men in charge.” —Lisa Miller, Newsweek
